Firewise Community Fire Awareness program

What is Firewise?
From www.Firewise.org:
"The National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Firewise Communities program encourages local solutions for wildfire safety by involving homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers, firefighters, and others in the effort to protect people and property from wildfire risks.

The program is co-sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, the US Department of the Interior, and the National Association of State Foresters.

To save lives and property from wildfire, NFPA's Firewise Communities program teaches people how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take action now to prevent losses. We all have a role to play in protecting ourselves and each other from the risk of wildfire."

More information on Firewise programs and their quarterly newsletter with information on what other communities are doing to be fire safe can be found at the Firewise website:

Some recent Firewise News:   The spring edition of the How-To Firewise newsletter has been posted online.

This edition provides a 2014 Year-in-Review and details valuable stories shared through nationwide Firewise Day narratives.  Articles also highlight program activities with USAA Insurance; GIS technology developments; lessons learned by a Firewise Community in New Jersey; new research promoting Firewise Principles; and of course, Firewise “By the numbers”.

Please share the newsletter, and past editions, with your neighbors and let us know if you would like any specific articles for your community’s use as handouts or social media pieces.

In Vineyard Mountain, Firewise is led by the Oregon Department of Forestry and the Corvallis Rural Fire District and has representatives from the Road, Park, Water and Swim clubs.

In July 2012, Vineyard Mountain was awarded a plaque from the Oregon Department of Forestry in honor of their efforts to create a fire safe environment for our residents!

The Vineyard Mountain Firewise plan is available for download here.
